Polypropylene (PP) is a remarkably versatile polymer that can be manufactured into two distinctly different fabric types: woven and non woven. Despite sharing the same chemical composition, these fabrics have little else in common. Their structures, properties, and ideal applications are fundamentally different. At Wenzhou Shuyou Packaging, we have over 18 years of experience manufacturing both woven and non woven PP bags. We have helped countless clients navigate the decision between these materials, matching bag performance to their specific product, handling, and budget requirements. This guide provides a comprehensive comparison to inform your choice.
How Woven PP Bags Are Made
The manufacturing process for woven PP begins with polypropylene resin pellets. The resin is melted and extruded into a thin film, which is then cooled and cut into narrow tapes. These tapes are stretched to orient the polymer molecules, dramatically increasing tensile strength. The oriented tapes are then wound onto bobbins and fed into circular looms. The looms weave the tapes in a plain weave pattern, creating a continuous tube of fabric. The fabric is then cut to length, and one end is sewn closed or fitted with a valve. The resulting bag has a distinct grid pattern and a stiff, fabric-like feel.
Because the tapes are oriented and woven, the final material has exceptional strength in both directions. The interlocking structure distributes loads evenly, preventing localized stress that could cause failure. Woven PP bags are designed to handle heavy weights, abrasive contents, and rough handling. They are the standard for bulk packaging in agriculture, construction, and industry.
How Non Woven PP Bags Are Made
Non woven PP uses a completely different manufacturing process called spunbonding. Polypropylene resin is melted and extruded through spinnerets to create continuous filaments. These filaments are laid randomly onto a moving belt to form a web. The web then passes through heated rollers that bond the fibers together at their intersections. No weaving or knitting occurs. The resulting fabric has a soft, felt-like texture and is uniform in all directions.
Because the fibers are randomly laid and bonded, non woven fabric has lower strength than woven fabric but is much softer, more flexible, and more breathable. It drapes easily, folds flat, and is comfortable to carry. Non woven bags are ideal for applications where light weight, low cost, and print quality are priorities.
Comparing Structural Properties
The fundamental difference between woven and non woven is structural. Woven fabric has an ordered, grid-like structure where individual tapes are mechanically interlocked. This structure provides high tensile strength, tear resistance, and dimensional stability. If a tape breaks, the surrounding tapes continue to bear the load. Non woven fabric has a random, bonded structure where fibers are fused at contact points. This structure provides softness, flexibility, and uniform properties in all directions, but lower strength. If a bond breaks, surrounding bonds may not compensate.
This structural difference explains the performance characteristics of each material. Woven bags are much stronger and more durable. Non woven bags are much softer and more comfortable. Neither is inherently better; each suits different applications.
Comparing Tensile Strength and Load Capacity
Woven PP bags have typical breaking strengths of 150-200 kg per square meter. A standard woven bag (80 gsm) can safely hold 25-50 kg of product. Heavy-duty woven bags (120 gsm or more) can hold 50-100 kg. The limiting factor is usually the seam strength, which we reinforce.
Non woven PP bags have typical breaking strengths of 10-20 kg per square meter. A standard non woven tote (80 gsm) can safely hold 10-15 kg of groceries or similar items. For heavier loads, the bag may stretch or tear at the handles.
For bulk agricultural products, construction materials, industrial components, or any application where loads exceed 15-20 kg, woven is the only appropriate choice. For lightweight retail products, promotional giveaways, or daily errands, non woven is usually sufficient.
Comparing Tear Resistance
Woven PP fabric resists tear propagation effectively. If a tape is cut or snagged, the tear tends to stop at the intersection with the next tape. The damage remains localized. This property is critical for rough handling environments where bags may contact sharp edges or equipment.
Non woven PP fabric is more susceptible to tear propagation. Once a tear begins, it can continue through the fabric because the random fiber structure does not have the same load-redistribution capability. However, for typical retail and promotional use, tear resistance is generally adequate.
Comparing Water Resistance
Both materials are made from polypropylene, which does not absorb water. However, the structure affects water penetration. Non woven fabric, even without lamination, is somewhat water-resistant because the dense fiber mat blocks some water. But water can eventually penetrate through the pores. Woven fabric, without lamination, is more porous because of the gaps between tapes. Water can pass through the weave relatively easily.
For waterproof applications, both materials can be laminated. Lamination adds a thin PP film layer that creates a complete moisture barrier. Laminated non woven bags are common for retail and produce. Laminated woven bags are used for outdoor storage of cement, fertilizer, and other moisture-sensitive products.
Comparing Print Quality
Non woven fabric provides a smoother, more uniform surface for printing. The bonded fiber structure has fewer voids than the woven grid. Digital and gravure printing on non woven produces sharp details, vibrant colors, and excellent consistency. This makes non woven the preferred choice for retail branding, promotional designs, and photographic artwork.
Woven fabric has a textured, grid-like surface. Printing on woven requires careful registration and may result in some distortion or incomplete coverage. However, modern gravure printing on woven PP can still produce good results, especially for bold logos and text. For detailed or photographic printing, non woven is superior.
Comparing Breathability
Non woven fabric is breathable because air can pass through the pore structure. This is advantageous for products that need ventilation, such as fresh produce, which releases moisture and ethylene gas. Breathability also prevents condensation and mold in stored goods.
Woven fabric is also breathable but more porous. Air passes through the gaps between tapes. For agricultural products like grains, coffee beans, and onions, this breathability is often desired to prevent spoilage. For applications requiring an oxygen barrier, neither material is suitable without a liner.
Comparing Cost
Non woven PP bags are generally less expensive than woven PP bags of similar size and weight. The spunbonding process is faster and requires less energy than weaving. The lower material cost and faster production translate into lower per-unit prices. For high-volume applications like promotional giveaways or retail checkout bags, this cost advantage is significant.
Woven PP bags cost more due to the more complex weaving process and the higher material strength required. However, for heavy-duty applications, the additional cost is justified by the superior performance and longer lifespan.
Application Recommendations Summarized
Choose woven PP bags for the following applications: agricultural products such as rice, grain, beans, coffee, fertilizer, and animal feed; construction materials including cement, sand, gravel, and mortar mix; industrial components, chemicals, and recycled materials; bulk storage and logistics requiring high strength and stacking; outdoor storage requiring UV stabilization; and multi-trip reuse where bags are collected and refilled.
Choose non woven PP bags for the following applications: retail checkout bags for clothing, gifts, books, and general merchandise; promotional giveaways at trade shows, conferences, and community events; grocery shopping totes for everyday consumer use; corporate gifts and employee welcome kits; event merchandise and conference bags; and any application where light weight, low cost, and high print quality are priorities.
Using Both Materials Within One Operation
Many businesses use both woven and non woven PP bags for different purposes. A farm might use woven bags for bulk grain storage and transport, but non woven bags for retail packaging of smaller quantities sold at farm stands. A hardware store might use woven bags for bulk cement and sand, but non woven bags for customer purchases of smaller items. A promotional company might offer both heavy-duty woven totes for industrial clients and lightweight non woven totes for consumer events. We manufacture both types and can supply all your bag needs from a single source.

Making the Right Choice for Your Business
When deciding between woven and non woven, consider these questions: What is the weight of the product being packaged? For loads exceeding 15-20 kg, woven is recommended. Will the bag encounter rough handling, sharp edges, or abrasive surfaces? If yes, woven provides superior protection. Will the bag be used once or multiple times? For single use, non woven may be cost-effective; for multiple uses, woven often provides better value. Does the bag need high-quality printing with photographic detail? Non woven offers superior print quality. Will the bag be exposed to moisture or outdoor conditions? Laminated versions of both work well, but woven with lamination is stronger for heavy wet loads. What is your budget per bag? Non woven is generally less expensive.
